Our Story

My food blogging journey started during the COVID19 lockdowns in May 2021, when I jumped on Facebook Live and cooked chapatis. After the show, a few people reached out and asked me to consider starting a YouTube Channel which led to the birth of Asedo’s Kitchen. At Asedo’s Kitchen, I share South Sudanese/Sudanese and Kenyan dishes I grew up eating. I also develop beginner friendly recipes and explore food from other cuisines. Since then, our YouTube community has grown at a steady rate, and it now stands at a little over 6600 subscribers. Fast forward to today, I am starting this blog in response to requests for written recipes.

Our Mission

Asedo’s Kitchen is on a mission to:

Take the guesswork out of South Sudanese cooking: South Sudanese cooking can be overwhelming especially for new cooks because it is not recipe-based. It’s a cuisine that is highly dependent on verbally passing down recipes from one generation to the next. I learnt by observing and therefore mastering what I like to call ‘the art of eye-balling’ ingredients. Asedo’s Kitchen aims to keep things simple/beginner friendly and to take the guesswork out of cooking traditional South Sudanese/Sudanese dishes.  Our YouTube tutorials to help new cooks learn or improve their cooking skills and gain confidence in the kitchen.

Change the narrative around kitchen duties and cooking: Cooking is an essential life skill, thus the need to encourage young people (male and female) to learn the basics of cooking. Traditionally, in South Sudan, domestic roles are defined and separated. Boys were not allowed into the kitchen which was considered a woman’s space. This has led to a generation that is struggling to survive in a changing world. In diaspora, many young people have moved out of home to further their education or careers and when this happens, they don’t know where to start in the kitchen.

Create a catalogue of written recipes: Asedo’s Kitchen aims to create a catalogue of recipes to preserve traditional South Sudanese recipes and shine a light on South Sudanese cuisine which does not get much attention. This is a place where young people born and/or raised outside South Sudan/Sudan can learn how to cook these dishes.

About Me

Who am I?

Hi there, my name is Akech aka Asedo, the creator of Asedo’s Kitchen. I am a Melbourne (Australia) based South Sudanese-Australian mother of 6, a wife, daughter, sister and food blogger. Cooking is one of my passions and I love sharing family friendly South Sudanese/Sudanese and Kenyan recipes. I’m on a mission is to preserve traditional South Sudanese recipes on this blog.

My Story

My passion for food started at a tender age. I grew up in Kenya and my mother prepared a lot of Sudanese meals, assuring the continued tradition of recipes being passed down through generations.

I admired how my mum navigated her way around the kitchen whipping up delicious meals. Not only were these meals delicious, but nutritious despite being prepared on a tight budget. I watched closely, listened carefully and asked lots of questions. Little did I know that a passion was brewing within me. Fast forward to today, I am sharing my passion with the world on YouTube and now here.

I would love my children to experience these meals and know how to cook them, thus the importance of establishing this blog as a reference point.
